Always a conversation starter, Tim De Vries has made a career out of his life experiences.
Born in a small village in the Netherlands, De Vries left the safety of home to explore the world as an adult. His wild experiences after studying business in Amsterdam took him to Ibiza to work in real estate. The island and its free spirited mentality led him to create artwork based on his experiences during that time.
Much like many other pop artists, De Vries is inherently tied to pop culture and what is bankable in today’s society. A clear Star Wars fan like most of the present galaxy, he has artisanally crafted a series of lightsabers so good that Vader himself might be jealous. “As a child, I always wanted to have my own lightsaber. My mom always brought home various sabers, but in the end I needed my own”. The TIM Saber is crafted in both aluminum and bronze, and boasts a sleek exterior with De Vries’ signature on the handle. Just be sure to use the force with wisdom and care when wielding!
His work also comes from the most relatable of places like waking up and looking over at a bedside table. The contents of which De Vries imagined to be immortalized in resin. Thus, the Wasted Table was born. Its provocative and boldly honest content is strategically placed and the epoxy resin and the black coated steel firmly supports the structure so the piece is fully usable as…you guessed it - a bedside table. In the same brilliant vain as a bedside table, we have the infamous Wasted Brick. The contents are a snapshot of a lifestyle that is the ultimate conversation starter.
His techniques used are simple in practice, yet extremely effective. They display each piece well, and allow for the viewer to get a sense of time and place in a split moment of life. A time and place that had many tables looking much like the pieces by De Vries was the 1980s. A tribute to the iconic brick phones of the eighties and nineties, The Brick Phone by Tim De Vries pays homage to what is now a vintage piece of technology. Set in bronze, The Brick Phone weighs a whopping 11 pounds and gives the viewer a sense of awe and nostalgia.
The best thing about street and contemporary artists is that they know how to have fun and make commentary on the lives that they themselves have lived or the lives that they’ve been able to observe. Tim De Vries works with a truthfulness about his own life and the lives he’s lived to create works that are unique and quite honestly, just good fun.
